Hues Within

Made for the realities of life with a mood disorder

Hues Within is a private, customizable daily companion for adults living with mood disorders.

The mission

Hues Within helps adults living with mood disorders keep a record of their experiences and bring clearer observations to conversations about their care.

A note from Cynthia

I started experiencing mood changes when I was sixteen. For years, the lows were the part I knew how to describe. I was diagnosed with persistent depressive disorder, and although medication sometimes helped, the lows kept returning.

I didn’t understand the highs. Sometimes they felt like finally being okay: everything made sense, and I wanted to try new things. Then the lows would return, and the hobbies, plans, and possibilities that had felt so right became difficult to continue. It was exhausting, and I often felt like I was letting myself and other people down.

At thirty, I was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder. That gave me hope—and a reason to start paying closer attention.

I began recording my days in Excel. Seeing mood, sleep, symptoms, prescription changes, and my menstrual cycle together helped me bring clearer observations to my psychiatrist.

Eventually, I wanted somewhere easier to keep that record: simple answers, clear visuals, and a calm home screen where I could check in and leave.

That became Hues Within. I built it because understanding myself brought me perspective and hope, and I wanted to make that process more manageable for others.

The meaning of Hues Within

The name Hues Within reflects the different moods and experiences that make up a person’s life.

How Hues Within works

Read about recording, Insights, and sharing

What Hues Within does

Hues Within helps adults living with mood disorders record daily experiences and notice patterns across mood, sleep, everyday context, medications, and optional cycle context. Home stays intentionally calm; detailed information belongs in History and Insights. This website and its public documents are available in English, Spanish, and Canadian French.

Private by design

Without an account, check-ins stay on the user’s device. With an account and the required consent, Hues Within privately backs up saved check-ins (including unfinished ones), personal details, current and past prescriptions, custom questions and tags, and setup and app preferences. These records can be restored on another device signed in to the same account. Account use remains optional, and reports or share images are created only when the user requests them.

Manual by design

The record is built from what the user chooses to enter: daily check-ins, medication history, period days, and custom questions. Recorded dates, calculated comparisons, and estimated cycle context stay clearly distinguished.

How Insights are organized

Insights is optional and off until you choose to turn it on. It organizes recorded answers into charts and comparisons. You can keep recording and reading History with Insights off. The Privacy Policy explains these choices, and the methodology explains the calculations.

Mood uses a directional -5 to +5 scale with 0 balanced. Mood Map, Timeline, Patterns, Cycle, and Medication views organize answered days without filling missing dates. Pattern ranges are descriptive and do not label clinical episodes. The full calculation rules are published in the methodology.

Learn and share

Hues Within prepares the Learn entries from the references listed with each entry. A citation is not an endorsement of Hues Within by that source. This information supports understanding, not diagnosis or individual treatment decisions.

The Learn library offers sourced, plain-language information about mood disorders, symptoms and sensations, and medication side effects. Charts, calendar images, and reports are for reflection and conversation; they are not medical advice, and the user decides what to share.

Important limitation

Hues Within supports personal reflection. It does not diagnose any condition, recommend medication changes, calculate drug doses, or replace a licensed clinician. If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. If you can, also reach out to someone you trust.
